The LOOK- Lady in Red

As you all know I adore Audrey Hepburn and have been adopting her graces and fashion since I was 12 years old. Although I simply love her style, there was a personal favourite item of hers I thought I could never emulate. With my wide hips and curvy shape, I resigned myself to never being able to pull off a sixties shapeless dress until a friend of mine gave me one that I thought I might just try.

Being brave I decided to wear it to work. Below is how I chose to style it, take a look to see how I did it. 

1. Sleeveless dark red shapeless dress with grey metallic clasp from Cortefiel- AED 425.

2. Black patent leather stilettoes from Clarks- AED 475.

3. Grey diamond shaped dangly earrings with etch detail from New Look- AED 20

4. Metallic Grey Hand bag from Kenneth Cole- AED 380

To update this look from day to night just swap the pumps for a pair of sparkly silver heels, slip on a statement cocktail ring and trade in the giant tote for a simple and sassy chrome clutch. 

Remember if you're a short girl like me it's best to pair shapeless dresses  like this one with sky scraper stilettos. Tall and lanky? then you have nothing to fear! Shapeless dresses were made for you so feel free to rock them with heels or flats- basically whatever your heart desires :)

The LOOK- Great style at every age.

People constantly ask me where I got my interest for fashion from. Well believe it or not, not only was I raised on good Christian values but also with an inherent love for style and being presentable. 

My mum and dad always believed in having the best and this extended to the schools we went to, the holidays we took and the clothes we wore.

As I grew older, I looked to my mother more and more for inspiration and I wasn't disappointed. Always making it a point to be well groomed, mum was always on trend with her style ageing as gracefully as she did.

Today as a high powered businesswoman she still takes as much joy in dressing up as I do, always managing to look elegant and age appropriate. Dressed for a day of meeting clients, take a look at her professional chic ensemble below.

This outfit is comfortable and still professional. the length of the sleeves on the top are modest enough to disallow the need for a blazer. The lace detail on them makes this top versatile for work or even dinner or drinks afterwards. Pair with jeans or a fitted skirt for a more causal effect. 

Kitten heels are a great option for taller ladies who want to keep heels low but still have a bit of an arc. They serve as a great alternative for ballet flats.

The LOOK- Shall we all live in a yellow submarine?

Can you guess what my favourite colour is? No surprise there its YELLOW!

Why yellow you ask? Well an island girl myself and so obviously in love with everything that goes with it, I tend to gravitate towards bright happy colours and the most beautiful of these to me is yellow.

Now a lot of people would blanch at the thought of wearing yellow. It’s usually perceived as a comical colour, more appropriate for the beach perhaps but not really something you could wear to the office. 

In today’s LOOK I’ll show you how you can incorporate fun colours in to your corporate wardrobe without looking like a circus. Have a look at what I put together below. 

1.Banana yellow and white striped tee with 3/4 sleeves from Nautica- AED 55.

6. For the shoes i traded in my traditional black pumps for these lovely Banana peeptoe wedges from Shoe Mart- AED 100

The LOOK- As Goth as it gets

Lots of people describe high school as possibly the worst experience of their lives. Many claim to have been angry teenagers deliberately spiting their parents with some going as far as being morbidly fascinated with death and all that relates to it. 

Often dressing in black and skulking around in thick eyeliner, pale faces and polished black nails, these boys and girls turned to Goth lifestyles to express themselves.

Never having embraced the Goth culture myself, I went through high school in a flurry of pink prom dresses, parties and friends. Although my experience with the trend has been minimal I felt like shedding my girlyness for a day and trying something a bit more serious or a change. 

1. Dark Grey Tee with black circular print from Old Navy- AED 35.

 

2, Black knee length A line skirt from Marks and Spencer- AED 100.

3. Black leather pumps from Clarks- AED 475

The necklace is the Piece de resistance here. It transports this tame work ensemble as close as I dare tread to the Gothic trend.

4. Dark grey chain and pearl necklace from ODEL (Sri Lanka)- AED 40

The LOOK- Time to shine!

I was born in beautiful tropical Sri Lanka, so far me how I feel has a lot to do with if it’s sunny outside or not. Living in Dubai this never really becomes an issue until a gloomy, sandy day like today rolls around.

My husband always jokes that this is the very reason why I’d have a tough time living in Europe (He’s from Holland so he should know). Nonetheless, the minute I got out of bed and saw the brown sky outside my window I immediately knew I wouldn't be in the mood to do glamour today.

Instead I decided to opt for a more relaxed ‘it’s the weekend’ look and threw on my favourite jeans and white tee ensemble. Have a look at my style below. 

1. Black super skinny ankle length jeans from New Look- AED 65

2. Basic white t-shirt from Tchibo- AED 20

3. Electric blue cotton blazer from H&M- AED 100

4. Black ballet flats with gold bow detail from ALDO- AED 100

I had left my black stilettos at work so the minute i got to my desk i changed into those. You can incorporate either shoe depending on the occasion. 

The necklace I paired with this outfit was my mums and is one she picked up at Global Village years ago. Because of how old it is neither of us can remember how much we paid for it. I've just added the picture below to show you how you can use a similar piece for an outfit with these colours. A red necklace would also have been a great addition. :)

If you've got the blues and don't feel like making a supreme effort with your wardrobe, then this simple classic style might just be the ticket! Remember while mixing different shades of the same colour to keep it simple and as close to each other (in terms of their hue) as possible.

The LOOK- Pretty in Pink

If you did a Google search for the best chick flicks of all time, I guarantee “Pretty in Pink” would be somewhere at the top. I remember sitting in my best friends room, watching it as teenagers and secretly hoping James Spade and Molly Ringwald would get together (even though it was pretty obvious to everyone that they definitely shouldn't).

A big girly girl myself, I have quite a few pink dresses in my closet and since it had been awhile since I’d worn any of them, I decided I would do just that today :)

3. Black and white chequered necklace on gold chain from ICONIC- AED 10 (also on sale)

I love this dress because its so light and comfy for hot sticky Dubai days and also relatively easy to keep wrinkle free. Although light coloured clothes usually tend to be see through, the cotton fabric on this dress does a good job of hiding any wobbly bits and unseemly panty/bra lines.

You can always switch the necklace for a simple string of pearls or earrings to give the outfit a more demure feel. If you're off to do some shopping or meet a friend after work then just pop a pair of flats in your bag and exchange your heels for them when you're leaving the office.

The LOOK- Are you an April fool?

Can you believe it’s the 1^st of April? My phone bleats as the very same question in the form of a Whatsapp from my friend wakes me up to a hazy Dubai morning.

Stepping out on the balcony with my first cup of tea for the day, my worst fears are confirmed as the thick warm air that slowly settling around me signals the start of a hot sticky day. Summer has definitely arrived.

Determined not to let this dampen my mood, I move to my favourite part of the morning- deciding what to wear for the day. 

This outfit has to be one of my favourites because it is so simple and easy to throw on. Breakdown of the items is below.

1. Black A line sleeveless dress with high neck from Phase Eight at Debenhams- AED 410 (approximately)

2. 18k gold chain with Turquoise pendant from Dubai Gold souk- AED 800

3. Gold bangle from forever 21- AED 25

 4. Brown gladiator platform sandals from ALDO- AED 280

 5. Last but not least black leather tote bag from Nine West- AED 180

Now your probably wondering why i decided to go with the gladiator sandals instead of my black leather Charles & Keith pumps, for example. The reason is that I again wanted to bring some contrast and variety to the outfit.

Since the dress is quite conservative and formal, i thought the sandals would bring an element of fun to the ensemble. Besides the sandals match the strap on the tote so it kind of brings the effect that it matches when at the same time it doesn't. I like that too.

Anyway that pretty much sums up my attire for today. if you want make it more formal then just trade in the sandals for a pair of basic black pumps and throw on a blazer for good measure. Fool or fabulous? be sure to let me know! xx
